The Improv Toolbelt: Character dynamics
AMPLIFY THE DYNAMIC
Be aware of how the characters on stage are responding to each other. What dynamic has been created? Can we focus in and build on that?
STATUS
Every interaction is a status transaction. Learning to identify and play with interactional status can help create realistic human interactions.
HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
We can develop the dynamic happening between characters by exploring their shared history, and how they see the world.
ARE YOU WITH OR AGAINST YOUR PARTNER?
Most powerful scenes revolve around the dynamic between the characters. One way to think about it is they can be supportive or antagonising. When you identify this you can play with it.
