Frequently Asked Questions

What types of comedy classes do you offer?

We offer a range of classes tailored to different aspects of comedy, grouped into improv, sketch and storytelling.

Our improvisation classes focus on spontaneity and active listening, encouraging students to create scenes and characters in real-time.

Sketch writing classes delve into the art of crafting comedic scripts, exploring structure, character arcs, and premise.

Our storytelling classes emphasise the importance of narrative in comedy, teaching students how to weave  compelling and truthful stories that resonate with audiences.

Are the classes suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! We pride ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming to all skill levels. Our taster sessions and beginner classes (level 101) are structured to provide a solid foundation in comedic techniques while fostering a supportive environment. We start with the basics, including warm-up exercises and introductory games that help break the ice and build confidence. Throughout our courses, we encourage students to express themselves and explore their comedic voice, making it a safe space for everyone to grow, regardless of their prior experience.

What is the age range for participants?

Our classes cater to a wide age range, primarily focusing on adults. We believe that comedy is a timeless art form, and we encourage participation from individuals of all backgrounds and experiences. For younger students, we are hoping to develop programmes in the future.

How long do the classes last, and what is the schedule?

Tasters are for the single session, of 60min. Our classes typically run for 6 weeks, allowing ample time for students to absorb the material and practice their skills. Each session lasts 1.5 hours. We currently offer classes on Wednesdays in Oxford, and are hoping to expand this in the future. All classes and tasters are advertised on Eventbrite.

What is the class size, and what is the instructor-to-student ratio?

We keep our class sizes small, generally ranging from 5 to 15 students. This allows for a more intimate learning environment where instructors can give personalised feedback and support to each participant. The instructor-to-student ratio ensures that everyone receives attention and guidance, which is crucial for developing skills in a collaborative format like comedy. Smaller classes also foster a sense of community, making it easier for students to connect with one another and build lasting friendships.

What can I expect to learn in an improv class?

In our improv classes, students can expect to learn various core skills, including the fundamentals of spontaneity, character creation, and scene work. We focus on techniques like "find agreement and build” to promote collaboration and active listening. Throughout the course, participants will engage in a variety of games and exercises designed to sharpen their creative thinking and collaboration abilities and boost their confidence on stage. By the end of the class, students will have a solid grasp of core improvisational principles and be able to perform scenes with greater ease and creativity.

Are there opportunities for performances or showcases?

We have just announced a new long-form improv jam for Oxford. In a jam people can volunteer to take part and there is a space for one performance group.

What is the cancellation policy for classes?

Our cancellation policy requires a 3-day notice for any cancellations. This policy ensures that we can manage class sizes effectively and provide opportunities for other students to join. Refunds are available only for cancellations made before the first class begins. We understand that life can be unpredictable, and we encourage students to communicate with us regarding any issues they may encounter, as we aim to be flexible and accommodating whenever possible.

How can I register for a class?

Registration is easy and can be completed online through Eventbrite.

What is the overall philosophy or approach of your comedy program?

Our goal is to cultivate new comedic ideas and original pieces that resonate with audiences, fostering an environment where students feel empowered to explore and innovate. We value the diversity of approaches to improv, and specialise in long-form improv.

We place a strong emphasis on the "game of the scene," encouraging students to discover and heighten the comedic elements that naturally arise during performances. This technique not only sharpens improvisational skills but also enhances the overall impact of the scenes.

Moreover, we are committed to reaching and engaging people across Oxfordshire, recognizing the importance of community in creating.
