What to expect and how to thrive in the jam environment!

Jams are such a valuable part of many improv communities. They are an opportunity to 'perform', but keep the supportive welcoming atmosphere that brings improvisers of different experience together. Jams often include warmup games and improviser being randomly assigned to scenes or challenges.

Tonight (5th June) we have the final Triple Jam in Oxford, which invites people to join fun improv games, long-form scenes, and to watch a guest team.

In this post I wanted to reflect on how to thrive at a jam:

  • Embrace Diverse Experience Levels: Improv jams often bring improvisers with varying levels of experience together, from beginners to seasoned improvisers. This diversity is a great opportunity to learn from each other, share perspectives, and grow as a performer. Be open to the different styles and approaches of others. Support your scene partners on stage, and be curious to learn new games.

  • Flexible Contribution: One of the beautiful aspects of an improv jam is the flexibility in how you can participate. Whether you want to take the lead in a scene, support others as a scene partner, or simply observe and learn, there’s a space for everyone. Find what feels comfortable for you and ask yourself if you want to take on a new challenge for yourself.

  • Focus on the Fun: Remember that the primary goal of an improv jam is to have fun! Allow yourself to be playful and enjoy the spontaneity of the moment. This mindset will not only enhance your experience but also create a welcoming atmosphere for others.

  • Work on Specific Skills: Improv jams provide a perfect setting to hone specific skills, such as quick thinking, character development, or emotional range. Set personal goals for each session and use the collaborative environment to practice and receive feedback from your peers.

  • Build Connections: Use the jam as an opportunity to connect with other improvisers. Networking can lead to future collaborations, classes, or performances. Engage with others, share your experiences, and be open to new friendships that can enrich your improv journey.

  • Stay Open-Minded: Improvisation is all about exploration and discovery. Stay open to unexpected ideas and directions that scenes may take. This openness not only enhances your creativity but also contributes to a supportive environment where everyone feels free to express themselves.
